To recognise, and wish to overcome, our modern alienation from 'Life', is necessary - but only half of what we need. A few tantalizing samples quoted in a review make me want to look it up too.<br /><br />Jacques Barzun once pointed out that, in addition to the invention of telecommunications, the decline in quantity of correspondence was also caused by the decline in the affording and employing of servants by the middle class.
