If you are honest, you will see for yourself within the next fortnight, probably sooner - so there is no point in my trying to persuade you today. From an Americ...I am struggling to understand this. From an American perspective: the US has been quite weak in its response to this virus. The president only declared a state of emergency on Friday, after reassuring the public for weeks that this is basically just the flu. The state governments and the private sector are taking matters into their own hands with varying degrees of aggressiveness. No religious services have been banned (as far as I'm aware), though many public events have been canceled and school districts closed. Overall, these measures seem quite sensible to me, and even desirable. I am not aware of *any* public figure calling for mass "lockdowns" of the kind seen in Communist China, though presumably many in the establishment are preparing just that - but good luck enforcing it.

The British government seems to be taking an even more nonchalant approach than the US, floating a "herd immunity" strategy which, as far as I can tell, means letting the virus rip through most of the population while quarantining only the most at-risk groups.

I do not know know whether the mass lockdowns in Italy, France and Spain are justified. However, the (apparently) dire situation in the hospitals in northern Italy suggests to me that coronavirus is a serious problem that needs to be taken seriously - not with hysteria or totalitarian power-grabs, but with measured containment and mitigation efforts to slow the spread of the virus and prevent health systems from being overwhelmed.

If there is an apoclyptic dimension to this situation, at least in North America and the UK, I fail to see it - but perhaps it will become evident over the coming weeks.Hari Seldonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10208029436316655499noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4683970826895755480.post-22593743512810636082020-03-15T06:31:51.966+00:002020-03-15T06:31:51.966+00:00@Andrew - Remarkable! The observed excess of deaths is not completely unexpected, given the high number of fragile very old subjects living in Italy. In conclusion, the unpredictability of the influenza virus continues to present a major challenge to health professionals and policy makers."

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1201971219303285

It looks like Italy's high mortality rate isn't new. 25k deaths a couple years ago from Flu. Looks like it was on an annual uptrend (maybe with increasing shift towards elderly). It looks like the death rate from Coronavirus in Italy would have to compound for another month to exceed normal flu season levels. The Birds of Doom haven't done that anywhere.

I guess the cards will be revealed when/if new cases drop off in Italy, but the Pope keeps the doors shuttered. I am a believing Roman Catholic and so believe the evidence of the spiritual assault will be first visible there. A few months ago they were venerating pagan idols in Rome.

It does seem like a failure spiritually, but we've already done that a while back. Just no excuse to close the churches yet everywhere. At least the Priests are still giving private masses. Some diocese have not closed their doors. US president maybe sensed this on some level and called for a day of prayer this Sunday (as most churches have shuttered their doors).

Kudos to the Mormons for preparing their flock for Home Church.Andrewnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4683970826895755480.post-49915592234877371632020-03-14T20:10:08.771+00:002020-03-14T20:10:08.771+00:00Oh look, the largest metropolitan area in the stat...Oh look, the largest metropolitan area in the state of California is using the crisis to promote communism!

https://twitter.com/sashaplot_/status/1238859631209746434Ingemarhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05695600705603036692noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4683970826895755480.post-32599613341158517002020-03-14T09:38:38.544+00:002020-03-14T09:38:38.544+00:00@Frak - Yes, this is The Point...
One value of ...@Frak - Yes, this is The Point...

One value of this extraordinary time is that we reveal our-selves to our-selves; and we are then confronted by the question: do we like what has been revealed?

From this comes the best possible opportunity to re-evaluate our evaluations; to be honest with oru-selves about our-selves - and, of course, for those who are disgusted with themselves - yet another, but perhaps clearer and more urgent - chance to repent.
