How to try being a Christian

If you think that you want to be a Christian, try allowing yourself to think as a Christian (as best you may) - and without continually and deliberately blocking or checking your Christian thoughts with questions and critique.

That is, allow yourself to think like a Christian for at least a few hours.

Then, and only then, you can look back and question and criticize the experience - taken as a whole.

Because what matter is Christianity-as-a-whole - that is what Christianity actually is.

Christianity is not a collection of detached fragments. Indeed, nothing is a collection of detached fragments.

No discourse - whether science, law, a poem - ever makes any kind of sense when chopped-up and examined one piece at a time (which is what people so often do with Christianity). The detached fragments do not and never could have free-standing validity.

So Christianity ought to be understood and evaluated in a big enough chunk that its viability has a chance to become apparent. Then, and only then, can our decision be informed.

A few hours of solid trial of what it feels like to think as a Christian... It is a lot to ask in a busy life, but surely it is worth it.

  1. Just so.

Christianity is a way of life, not an ideology.
