Born free!

Excellent song from my childhood - written by the brilliant John Barry and sung by the fine voice of Matt Monro.

It's a simple tune, but made memorable by the understated and lyrical performance - listen for the breath control and subtle phrasing.

The song Born Free is about lions, from a movie of the same name; but the phrase also applies to the human soul: whether we humans like it, or (apparently mostly) not.

  2. @David - The video works fine here, but no harm in having an alternative link!

  3. Oh, yes, that song takes me back. But then The Imp of Free Association wakes up.

An American humor magazine did a series of song parodies on obsessions--

    MG,
I just love to touch you.
    When I double-clutch you,
MG, it gives me a thrill.

I've forgotten most of it, but on the "roaring tide" line the car freak looks under the hood/bonnet and:

The sight of each piston rod
Makes me feel closer to God--

    MG,
I wash you and wax you.
    If some Chevy smacks you,
    I'll die, MG.

What did you think of the later Travers & McKenna collaboration, Ring of Bright Water?
