Battle of Britain Day

The 15th September was chosen to commemorate the Battle of Britain, since it was this day in 1940 that was the turning-point.

I have mislaid or lost my Spitfire pin-badge, so can provide only the above generic photo!

Not forgetting the most numerous of the RAF fighters: the Hawker Hurricane; here depicted shooting-down a Heinkel 111 bomber over the Thames:

It was Hugh Dowding and Keith Park who were most responsible for Britain's victory:

Dowding devised and implemented the integrated defence interception-system; of radar, spotters, WAAF plotters (standing at a big map table, moving tokens with croupier-poles - see below) etc; and Park was responsible for managing the pilot and fighter resources of the major South East sector, around London and the likely invasion beaches - which bore the brunt of the German assault.
