Now that I view this on a larger screen, I see what you mean. It looks like a left side profile. His left eye gazes in the direction of the tip of the big nose. Even the right eye is visible in a Picasso-fashion.
The expression of the mouth is hard to make out, as it doesn't seem to match what the eyes convey.
